Ever since Marjorie and the gods put up their cheat sheets to dating them as NPCs in game, let's have the meme spread out into the community! Obviously, you're not beholden to them. No one is going to force you to have an instant wedding upon 10 hearts. These are more like gimmicks and guides to people's characters. IC=/=OOC, of course, but if you really want to play a ship... it's like having a funny 'how to'.

More realistically it's a matter of mutual respect and trust. He tried to do the marriage thing once and had it spit back into his face so it's mostly a prove yourself to be reliably there over a long period of time thing. Getting him sober wouldn't hurt either.
